London is less than a two-hour flight from Berlin, so the trip easily feels like another European weekend. However, the UK is not part of the Schengen area, and a German residence permit alone does not grant entry into the UK: requirements depend on citizenship and the purpose of the trip.
A German passport holder needs an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for a short visit, while a foreigner living in Germany may require a full visa to the UK from Germany. Therefore, until you check the rules for your specific passport, it's difficult to understand what to apply for, how much time to allow, and whether you can already purchase non-refundable tickets.
And when a visa is needed, the Visa Agency analyzes the initial data, determines the appropriate category, and prepares the application process. The client receives a clear plan even before completing the application, paying fees, and scheduling biometrics.
A week in London may look the same only on the calendar. One person is visiting museums, another is meeting partners, a third is studying, and a fourth is planning to work. For the British immigration system, these are different purposes, so their applications will be different.
Tourism, visiting friends, a conference, or a course of up to six months are usually covered by the Standard Visitor visa. Regular visitors can choose a multi-year visa for two, five, or ten years, although each individual visit is still limited to a set period.
Long-term study leads to a Student visa, employment leads to one of the work categories, and relocating to be with a spouse or child leads to a family visa. For marriage registration without further residence, there's a Marriage Visitor visa, and for transfers through a British airport, there are transit visas.
Therefore, you can't choose based on a familiar name or someone else's successful experience. The category determines the entire structure of your application: what you need to prove, what documents you need to attach, and what plans you can include in the application.
The UK visa officer needs a coherent travel history. Your documents should explain why you're traveling, where you got the money, and what ties you to Germany. Therefore, the following documents are usually included with the passport and application form:
Documents in German are accompanied by a full translation into English. However, tickets and hotel reservations do not replace financial and personal evidence: UKVI classifies them as materials that, by themselves, provide little or no proof. After completing the online application, the applicant undergoes biometrics at a visa application center in Berlin, Düsseldorf, or Munich (advance booking is required).
UKVI begins counting the processing time after the applicant has confirmed their identity, submitted the completed application online on a dedicated portal, uploaded documents (correctly categorized), submitted biometrics, and submitted physical documents. For visitor, student, and most work categories, decisions are made in approximately three weeks. Family applications take significantly longer – approximately 12 weeks.
A Standard Visitor application can be submitted up to three months before travel. This window should allow for the visa application center appointment, the visa application process, and any additional inquiries. If the information on the application requires clarification, documents are being reviewed for longer, or the applicant is invited for an interview, the calendar can easily extend beyond the standard timeframe.
A UK application starts costing money even before the visit to the center. A Standard Visitor visa for up to 6 months from Germany currently costs €165. A 2-year visa costs €614, a 5-year visa costs €1,096, and a 10-year visa costs €1,370. A multi-year visa remains a permit for individual visits, not a way to permanently reside in the country.
A separate fee is charged for each applicant, including children. This fee may include translations, scanning, passport delivery, and selected visa center services. This fee is charged for application processing: if UKVI refuses or issues a visa for a shorter period, the fee will not be refunded. Additionally, if a person is applying outside their country of citizenship, a biometrics fee of approximately 95 euros (subject to change due to fluctuations in the GBP exchange rate) is mandatory for each applicant.
Germany also offers the Priority Visa Service, which costs 500 pounds, with the embassy making a decision within 5 working days, and the Super Priority Visa, which costs 1,000 pounds, with a decision made by the end of the next working day.
A coherent story is crucial for the decision. Salary, savings, duration of trip, employment in Germany, and itinerary must all be plausible. If a vacation costs several months' worth of income, a large transfer arrives before application, and the source of the money is not explained, the officer will have questions.
The reasons for returning are checked separately: work, study, family, housing, and legal status in Germany. Weak evidence leaves too much room for doubt. Hidden past refusals, discrepancies in dates, and attempts to embellish a biography are even more damaging. False information or a questionable document can ruin not only the current application but also future applications.
Ultimately, UKVI needs to see a clear picture: the trip is genuine, the funds have an explainable source, and after the visit, the applicant will return to their life in Germany.
The more complex the applicant's situation, the more difficult it is to distill it into a convincing application. A travel sponsor, a recent job change, income from multiple sources, or an invitation from the UK require explanations, not a rote list of references. That's why Visa Agency helps you put all the details together before submitting your application:
The decision is made by UKVI, so no one can promise a visa will be issued. The agency's goal is to eliminate errors and weaknesses from your application, which can be identified early. You can begin the process with a free consultation, where our specialist will discuss your trip and suggest a course of action.
