What documents are needed for a guest visa to China?

Much depends on the chosen category for a guest visa, but the basic applicant's application remains roughly the same. The difference arises in confirming the relationship with the inviting person and their status in China, so the applicant's documents are collected first:

1. A valid passport;
2. An electronic visa application form and photograph;
3. Copies of previous Chinese visas, if applicable;
4. Proof of legal stay in the country of application, if applying elsewhere than where the applicant is a citizen;

• For a Chinese citizen - a copy of their Chinese ID card;
• For a foreigner with permanent residence permit - copies of their passport and Chinese permanent residence permit;
• For an S2 visa - copies of the passport and valid residence permit of the foreigner working or studying in China.

If the trip is being arranged to visit a friend under the L visa category, the invitation is issued according to the rules for this category and is also accompanied by an identity document of the inviter. The consulate or visa center may request additional documents or the original letter.

How to apply for a visitor visa to China

And that's where the unified process ends. In one country, documents are accepted by the Chinese Visa Application Service Center, while in another, the procedure may differ, so the appointment, submission method, and original document requirements are checked at the selected location. For short-term Q2 and S2 visas, fingerprinting is exempted until the end of 2026, although the consulate may still invite the applicant for additional verification.

After submitting your passport, the application status is tracked online. The completed document is collected in the manner prescribed by the specific visa center or consulate.

Four business days is the standard guideline for a typical processing time after the passport and complete application package have been accepted. Online verification of the application is not included in this timeframe, so the actual processing takes longer.

If an error is found in the documents, a request for supplements is made, or an interview is invited, the processing time will be extended. Some visa centers offer expedited processing in 2-3 business days, but the terms and availability of this service depend on the application location. Therefore, it's best not to tie your trip to the minimum fee.

The application form lists one date, the invitation another, the relationship is not documented, the inviter's phone number is unanswered, and the information about the place of residence or expenses is inconsistent. Chinese consular instructions specifically list false or incomplete information, forged documents, and the inconsistency of the actual purpose with the visa type as reasons for refusal. If the applicant is applying in a country other than their country of citizenship, the lack of suitable proof of legal residence will further complicate the situation. If the applicant is paying for the trip themselves, the consulate may also examine whether the declared funds are sufficient to cover the expenses.
