The JAPAN eVISA is intended for short-term tourism, and not all citizenships qualify for it. And often, even if you're traveling to visit relatives, friends, or acquaintances, the application is processed using the standard procedure.

From there, the rules of the specific Japanese mission come into play. In some countries, documents are accepted directly at the embassy or consulate, while in others, applications are submitted through a visa center or accredited agency. Do I need to prove my financial solvency?

How long does it take to process a Japanese visitor visa?

""Five working days"" sounds encouraging, and this is the standard timeframe stated by MOFA for routine processing. The countdown begins the day after the application is received.

However, you shouldn't rely on these five days for your trip. If the consulate requires additional documents, clarification, or an interview, the timeframe will increase. Sometimes the review process can take several weeks. However, a close departure date alone doesn't qualify for expedited processing, so it's best to submit your documents with ample time.

Cost of a visitor visa?

Consular fees in Japan increased as of July 1, 2026. A single-entry visa costs the equivalent of 15,000 yen, or approximately 94 USD or 82 EUR. A multiple-entry visa costs approximately 30,000 yen, or approximately 188 USD or 163 EUR. The fee is calculated at each consulate and accepted in the local currency of the country of application, so the fee may vary slightly.

Therefore, the ""let's correct a couple of documents and try again next week"" approach doesn't work here.
