For the educational institution, the matter is resolved, but for IRCC, you're still a foreign citizen seeking to enter Canada and spend several months or years there. It's just that the reason for your trip is now much more serious than simple tourism, meaning your application will be reviewed more closely.

A Canadian student visa requires more than just confirmation of enrollment. You also need to consider the requirements for your Study Permit, PAL/TAL, financial documents, biometrics, motivation letter, and the specifics of your chosen program. It's easy to get confused here, and a weak point in one of your documents could result in a refusal.

What is a student visa to Canada and who needs one?

A 12-week English or French course and a two-year college program are two different things under Canadian law. In the first case, a Study Permit is usually not required, as the entire course of study fits within six months of legal residence in the country. But in the second case, a study permit is essential.

The term ""study visa"" itself is more of a colloquialism. It usually refers to the paperwork for a foreigner going to study in Canada. A Study Permit is primarily required for programs longer than six months, unless the student falls under one of IRCC's exceptions. Requirements for shorter studies may be simpler.

What visa do I need to study in Canada?

A student may have two different documents. A Study Permit entitles you to study in Canada, but it is not a visa in itself and is not used as an entry document.

Depending on your citizenship and passport, you will need a Temporary Resident Visa or eTA to cross the border. You don't need to apply for these separately when you first apply for a Study Permit: if your study permit is approved, IRCC will issue the necessary entry document automatically and without an additional fee.

Therefore, the familiar term ""student visa"" somewhat simplifies the actual process. For long-term study, the main issue is obtaining a Study Permit, while a TRV or eTA already provides access to Canada.

Who can get a study visa to Canada?

A desire to study abroad alone is not enough for IRCC. The applicant must be accepted by a Designated Learning Institution, have funds for tuition, accommodation, and return travel, and meet general immigration requirements.

There is also a less formal but important issue: the visa officer must believe that the person is genuinely going to study and will leave Canada when the authorized stay ends. Therefore, a good candidate is not just a student with a Letter of Acceptance, but an applicant whose educational goal, finances, and personal circumstances are consistent.

What documents are needed for a study visa to Canada?

First, you need to confirm the reason for the trip. A Canadian college or university issues a Letter of Acceptance, or admission letter. The institution must have DLI status and be eligible to accept international students.

Some applicants also require a PAL or TAL—a confirmation from the province or territory. Quebec uses its own document, the CAQ.

IRCC looks at the student separately: their background, financial situation, and circumstances that help them understand their future plans. And requires from him:

• International passport;
• Certificates, diplomas and transcripts;
• Documents on work and professional experience, if they are relevant to the selected program;
• A photo taken in accordance with all the requirements specified on the IRCC website;
• Bank statements and proof of income;
• Sponsor documents, if expenses are covered by another person;
• Confirmation of payment of a deposit or part of the program cost, if payment has already been made;
• Motivation letter;
• Documents on marital status, marriage certificates or birth certificates of children (when relevant to the case);
• Medical examination results and a certificate of no criminal record (if required) IRCC).

The requirements vary for everyone, and IRCC determines additional documents based on the applicant's specific situation.

How to apply for a study visa to Canada

In Canada, almost the entire process is done online. After being accepted to DLI and receiving a PAL/TAL or CAQ, if required, the student creates an IRCC account, completes a general questionnaire, a survey, completes a Study Permit application, uploads confirmations and documents (with translations), and pays the fee. Paper submission remains the exception.

After submitting the application, IRCC may call you for biometrics, request additional documents, or a medical examination. The status of your application can be tracked in your personal account.

There is an important caveat: when applying from abroad, approval does not mean the Study Permit has been issued. IRCC sends a Port of Entry Letter of Introduction, and the permit itself is processed by a border officer upon arrival in Canada. Therefore, you should bring this letter along with your passport and study documents.

Financial Requirements for a Canadian Study Visa

IRCC looks beyond just the student's bank balance. It's important to demonstrate that the student can afford to cover their first year in Canada without relying on future part-time work. The financial minimum is not static and is reviewed annually on September 1st. Tuition and travel costs are added to this amount. If the program lasts longer than a year, you will also need to explain where the money will come from.

The financial history must be clear and supported by documents:

• Bank statements for the last 4 months;
• Documents on the student's or their parents' income;
• A letter from the sponsor along with confirmation of their finances;
• Information on the student loan;
• Confirmation of the scholarship;
• Documents on the already paid portion of the tuition or living expenses;
• Proof of funds in a Canadian bank account or GIC (if used in a specific case).

For Quebec, amounts are calculated according to specific provincial rules. In other cases, only the ""formal minimum"" is used. Risky: If the program costs are high or the student is traveling with a spouse, partner, or children, the required amount increases, as IRCC requires that expenses for each accompanying family member be included.

Motivation Letter for a Study Visa to Canada

Documents can show where a person is enrolled and how much money they have. But they don't always answer the simpler question: why did they choose this particular program in Canada in the first place? For this, a letter of explanation, often called a motivation letter, is used. IRCC recommends attaching it to the application and explicitly asks for an explanation of the purpose of the study and an understanding of the responsibilities of an international student.

The letter should connect the chosen program to the applicant's previous education, work, or future plans. It is important to clearly explain a change of profession, repeating education at the same level, a long break after studies, or a program that at first glance seems unrelated to previous experience. Here, specific personal logic is more useful than general arguments about the high quality of Canadian education.

Do I need to provide biometrics for a study visa to Canada?

For most applicants, yes. IRCC uses fingerprints and a photograph to verify identity. After receiving a Biometric Instruction Letter, students make an appointment at the nearest Visa Application Centre to provide fingerprints and a photograph. This is typically done within 30 days from the date of receipt of the letter.

If biometrics have already been provided for a Canadian visa, Study Permit, or Work Permit, there is usually no need to repeat the process: for temporary residents, biometric data is valid for 10 years.

There are exceptions. For example, children under 14, applicants over 79, and US citizens applying for a Study Permit do not need to provide biometrics. Therefore, before paying the fee, it is best to check whether the requirement applies to a specific student.

Canada Student Visa Processing Time

It is impossible to provide a single processing time for all students. IRCC calculates the processing time from the receipt of a complete application to the decision, and the speed depends on the country of application, the workload of the service, and the case itself. The official calculation also includes the time required to submit biometrics. The most current forecast can be found in the Processing Times service on the IRCC website.

Additional checks, requests for new documents, or medical examinations can delay processing. IRCC specifically warns that the published processing time is not a guarantee, and complex applications may take longer to process.

Therefore, relying on the semester start date too closely is risky. It's best to prepare your Study Permit application immediately after receiving the necessary documents from the educational institution and province to allow time for biometrics and any IRCC inquiries.

Canada Study Visa Processing Cost

The Study Permit application processing fee is CAD 150. If biometrics are required, an additional CAD 85 is added to this amount. This brings the government fee to CAD 235 for a standard first-time application with biometrics.

There is no separate fee for a Temporary Resident Visa or eTA. If the student requires one of these documents to enter Canada after their Study Permit is approved, IRCC will process it automatically.

If the application is refused, the CAD 150 processing fee is non-refundable. If the student decides to reapply, this fee will need to be paid again. Biometrics are re-paid only when they are actually required again.

Reasons for Canadian Student Visa Refusal

Even a student who has been accepted and is able to pay for the first year can be refused. IRCC evaluates the entire trip, not individual documents. For example, questions arise when the chosen program is poorly explained by previous education and experience, and the application doesn't clearly explain the reason for traveling to Canada specifically for this program. The officer must ensure that the primary purpose of the trip is truly study.

Funds and post-program plans are also reviewed separately. The applicant must prove funds for study, accommodation, and return travel, and convince the officer that they will leave Canada after the end of their authorized stay. Problems can also arise due to medical or immigration restrictions, criminal records, false information, or concealment of important circumstances.

Since July 2025, IRCC will, in most cases, include notes from the officer explaining the decision with Study Permit refusals. Therefore, before reapplying, it makes sense to first examine the specific reason for the refusal rather than simply resubmitting the same documents.

Can I work in Canada while studying?

Yes, if permitted by the terms of my Study Permit. During semesters, students may work off-campus for up to 24 hours per week, and without such a limitation during official holidays. However, work may only begin after the program begins. Work is also prohibited during Authorized Leave (even if permitted by the Study Permit).

Working on campus is regulated separately and, provided the terms of the Study Permit are met, has no hourly limit. Violating employment regulations can impact your student status and future applications in Canada.
