In France, it's easy to get used to the idea that a residence permit solves almost all travel issues in Europe. But Japan prioritizes citizenship. A French passport holder doesn't need a visa for a short tourist visit, while a foreigner living in Paris with a residence permit may need a full application. Therefore, having the same address in France doesn't necessarily mean the same entry requirements.
The trouble starts when this becomes clear after purchasing tickets. If a visa to Japan from France is required, you need to determine the visa category in advance, choose the correct application method, and allow time for an appointment at the embassy. Visa Agency will review the situation before the application process begins and help you organize the process so that visa issues don't have to be resolved in the final weeks before departure.
The embassy won't accept the phrase ""I want to explore Japan."" They need a precise itinerary, a clear budget, and proof that you will be able to return to France after the trip. Therefore, for a tourist application, the following are usually prepared:
The residence permit must be valid at least until your return to France. If you're visiting relatives or friends, instead of the usual tourist route, you'll need an invitation, information about the host, and proof of connection.
The decision itself often arrives faster than it takes to get an appointment. After documents are accepted in Paris and Lyon, your passport is usually returned in about five business days; in Marseille, it takes at least a week. But first, you need to wait for an appointment, and the earliest available slot isn't always convenient.
Applying too early isn't an option either: applications are accepted a maximum of three months before your trip. Therefore, it's best to find a middle ground—not rushing to the consulate six months in advance, but also not leaving everything the day before your departure. If you're asked to bring your documents, having some extra time will save you from having to cancel your tickets on the last day.
Compared to tickets to Tokyo, the consular fee seems almost modest. Effective July 1, 2026, a single-entry visa costs €90, a multiple-entry visa €180, and a transit visa €4. Cash is accepted upon passport collection. Citizens of some countries may receive discounts or a complete exemption from the fee.
However, the costs don't end there. Photography, travel to the embassy, document forwarding, and agency services are all paid separately. Therefore, it's smarter to calculate all the paperwork in advance rather than focusing solely on the cost of the consular sticker.
You can also submit your documents yourself. But if your trip is already tied to a vacation, an invitation, or purchased tickets, the cost of a mistake is measured in more than just money. Rewriting the application and re-collecting the necessary paperwork can easily eat up what seemed like ample time.
To protect you from such incidents, Visa Agency takes care of the preparation:
During a free consultation, you can immediately discuss your trip and determine whether your situation is ready for submission. Next, we'll give you a concrete plan, not a collection of guesses and advice from various sources.
