INNE KIERUNKI
America has long been a country familiar to many even before their first visit. Thanks to hundreds of films, New York is recognizable by a single street corner, California by its coastline. And some have relatives, friends, or former neighbors living overseas for years. Sooner or later, photos and phone calls cease to replace in-person meetings, and a very specific travel plan emerges.
But for this, you'll need a visitor visa to the United States. And here's where the main confusion arises, as there's no separate visa category with this name: visits to relatives and friends are classified as B-2, but in practice, the combined B1/B2 visa is also used. Visa Agency helps with the application process, taking into account the circumstances of the individual applicant and the requirements of the chosen consulate.
Who can apply for a visitor visa to the United States?
The mere fact that a son, sister, or friend lives in the United States does not create a separate right of entry. The B-2 is suitable for any foreign citizen who needs a visa for a temporary visit to relatives or friends.
However, not everyone needs one. Citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries can travel as visitors under an ESTA without a B-2 if they meet the program's requirements. This option is not available for citizens of Ukraine, Georgia, and the CIS countries, so they typically apply for a B-2 or a combined B1/B2 visa.
A residence permit in Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, or another country does not change this: eligibility for an ESTA is determined by citizenship and passport, not place of residence.
What documents are needed for a visitor visa to the United States?
The American B-2 visa has a short set of required documents, while the remaining documents depend on the applicant's situation. Before your rozmowa, you must prepare:
- A valid passport;
- The DS-160 confirmation page with the barcode;
- An rozmowa appointment confirmation (with the same DS-160 number);
- A receipt for the MRV fee, if required by the rules of the chosen consulate;
- A 5x5 cm photograph, if one was not included in the DS-160 or the consulate requests one separately.
Then the package is tailored to the individual. An employed applicant will need a letter from their employer detailing their position and vacation time, an entrepreneur will need business documents, and a student will need proof of study. If a person is applying in their country of residence, not citizenship, starting in 2026, they must be prepared to prove that they actually live there.
An invitation from a relative or friend in the United States and financial documents from the applicant or the person covering the expenses may also be included with the application. However, their role depends on the circumstances of the trip.
Do I need an invitation for a visitor visa to the United States?
An invitation here rather explains who the person is visiting and why. It is not included in the required documents for a B-2 visa, and having a relative or friend in the United States does not in itself provide any advantages in the visa application process. However, it significantly increases the applicant's chances of being granted a visa.
It is best to write such a letter without unnecessary formality. It is sufficient to include the inviter's information, their relationship to the applicant, their place of residence, the length of the visit, and the place where the visitor will be staying. If the host is covering a portion of the costs, this can also be noted and confirmed separately.
The invitation can be brought to the rozmowa along with the rest of the documents if it helps explain the trip more clearly. However, it is pointless to use it in place of the applicant's own documents: they must independently confirm eligibility for a B-2 visa.
How to Złóż wniosek o Visitor Visa to the US
The application process begins with the DS-160. The application requires information about the trip, employment, previous visits to the US, and other details, after which the confirmation page with the barcode is saved. Then, register in the appointment system of the selected consulate, pay the visa fee, and select an available rozmowa date.
Since 2026, the State Department recommends applying in the country of citizenship or residence. Therefore, someone with a Ukrainian passport and a residence permit in, for example, Germany or the Czech Republic, can complete the application process in their actual country of residence. When applying at your place of residence, you must be prepared to confirm this status.
On the appointed day, the applicant comes to the consulate with their passport and DS-160 confirmation page. If the visa is approved, the passport is retained for the visa affixation and then returned via the method provided by the specific consulate.
How to Successfully Pass the Interview
During the rozmowa, there's usually no time to recount the entire trip from beginning to end. The consul already sees the DS-160 and asks questions about the places they want to clarify: who the applicant is visiting, for how long, what they do at home, and who is paying for the trip. Therefore, memorizing the ""correct answers"" is rather harmful. It's better to reread your application in advance and calmly answer the same facts as stated in it.
Answers should be short, but not monosyllabic. If asked about a relative in the United States, simply explain who they are, where they live, and how much time you plan to spend together. If the question concerns work or family at home, it's worth stating specific circumstances rather than trying to convince the consul with generalities.
You can bring documents with you, but the rozmowa isn't limited to showing a folder of documents. The consul evaluates the applicant's situation and must ensure that they truly qualify for a temporary nonimmigrant visit.
How to prove financial solvency and intent to return
For a B-2 visa, there is no minimum amount after which the account is automatically considered ""sufficient."" The consul checks to see if the funds are sufficient for the stated trip: flights, accommodations, and daily expenses. This can be demonstrated with bank statements, proof of regular income, and other financial documents. If a relative or friend in the US is covering some of the expenses, it's acceptable to confirm their participation.
A similar logic applies to return. A letter from work alone doesn't guarantee anything, but when combined with regular employment, business, studies, housing, family, and other circumstances, it helps demonstrate that the person has reasons to return. By law, a B-2 applicant is initially considered a potential immigrant until they convince the consular officer otherwise, so it's not the thickness of the document that matters, but how well the purpose of the trip fits into their normal life.
How long does it take to process a US visitor visa?
There's no single processing time for a B-2 visa. In one country, you can find an available rozmowa quickly, while in another, the wait can stretch out for weeks or months. The State Department updates the Global Visa Wait Times table every month and specifically warns that the listed date for the next available rozmowa is not a guarantee.
After the rozmowa, the wait times also vary. If the consular officer does not require additional documents or an administrative review, the case typically moves on to visa issuance and passport return. However, these several steps are not included in the published rozmowa wait time. It is impossible to determine the completion date in advance during these reviews.
Therefore, for an actual trip, it is important to consider not the ""visa duration,"" but the entire process from the appointment to the passport return. The status of your case after the rozmowa can be checked through CEAC.
Visitor Visa Processing Cost
The visa fee for a B-2 or B1/B2 visa is $185 per applicant. A family does not apply as a single package: adults and children submit separate applications, so the fee is paid for each applicant. This fee is non-refundable if the visa is refused.
After approval, citizens of some countries are required to pay an additional visa issuance fee. This fee depends on citizenship and is determined by the principle of reciprocity. For example, there is currently no such fee for Ukrainian citizens on B-2 and B1/B2 visas. The exact amount for other passports should be verified in the Reciprocity Schedule.
Photography, passport delivery (if a paid option is selected), and other services not included in the consular fee may be charged separately.
Why a US Visitor Visa Can Be Denied
For a B-2 visa, the most important factor is not the invitation itself, but whether the applicant has convinced the consular officer of the temporary nature of the trip. The risk of refusal is higher if:
- The purpose of the visit is inconsistent with the DS-160 or rozmowa responses;
- Employment, business, family, or other circumstances outside the United States provide a weak justification for return;
- The budget for the trip is inconsistent with the income and duration of the trip;
- The application form is missing essential information or requested documents;
- There have been previous visa violations or overstays;
- The applicant has provided false information or concealed important circumstances.
A 214(b) refusal means that eligibility for a nonimmigrant visa was not established at the time of the review. For 221(g), the consulate may request documents or send the case for additional review.
To avoid the client facing either the first or second option, Visa Agency undertakes:
- Selecting a suitable application location;
- Completing and verifying the DS-160;
- Preparing a customized list of documents;
- Assistance with an invitation and confirmation of the purpose of travel;
- Verifying finances and circumstances for return;
- Scheduling an rozmowa;
- Preparing for the rozmowa and reviewing possible questions;
- Providing support for additional requests;
- Reviewing the refusal and preparing a re-application (rare, but it does happen).
The final decision on the visa remains with A consular officer, so we don't promise magic. But with our help, the likelihood of refusal is significantly reduced. Schedule a consultation so the Visa Agency team can analyze your case and find the best solution to make your trip to America to visit friends or family a reality!
