You can travel to China to visit a relative, spouse, or friend, but for the visa system, this is not the same. Here, the term ""guest visa to China"" does not refer to a separate, universal category. The visa type depends on who is inviting the person, the inviter's status in China, and the relationship between the parties.
Therefore, an error can appear even before the application: you may have the correct documents, but they don't fit the appropriate category. Therefore, when a client contacts Visa Agency, we first review their situation, verify the inviting party's status and the reason for the trip, and only then prepare the application. Thus, the choice of Q2, S2, or other suitable option is not based on the familiar word ""guest,"" but on the actual circumstances of the visit.
Here, the decisive factor is not the invitation itself, but the status of the person living in China. If the applicant is a Chinese citizen or a foreigner with permanent residence, a Q2 visa is usually suitable for a short family visit. When a relative is in the country for work or study, an S2 visa is used.
These categories do not apply to friends. For such a trip, an L visa with an invitation from an individual is considered, if a visa is required at all based on the applicant's passport.
For Ukrainian citizens with a regular passport, a visa is obtained in advance. Some citizens of CIS countries can enter China without a visa for short periods, so it's worth checking the rules for your specific citizenship before applying.
Much depends on the chosen category for a guest visa, but the basic applicant's application remains roughly the same. The difference arises in confirming the relationship with the inviting person and their status in China, so the applicant's documents are collected first:
For Q2, S2, and visiting a friend, the package differs further. In one case, family ties are important, in another, the status of a foreigner working or studying in China is important, and for L, specific requirements apply. Therefore, it's best to check the final list after the correct visa category has been determined.
The invitation required by the inviting party in China depends primarily on the guest's visa category. For a Q2 visa, the invitation must be from a Chinese citizen or a foreigner with permanent residence. The letter includes the applicant's details, the purpose and dates of the visit, the place of stay, the relationship between the parties, the source of expenses, and the contact information and address of the inviter.
Documents confirming the inviter's status are attached to the letter:
If the trip is being arranged to visit a friend under the L visa category, the invitation is issued according to the rules for this category and is also accompanied by an identity document of the inviter. The consulate or visa center may request additional documents or the original letter.
Processing is now available online. On the official portal, select the application city, complete the form, and upload the documents for your category. After a preliminary check, the system displays the next steps and notifies you when you can submit your passport.
And that's where the unified process ends. In one country, documents are accepted by the Chinese Visa Application Service Center, while in another, the procedure may differ, so the appointment, submission method, and original document requirements are checked at the selected location. For short-term Q2 and S2 visas, fingerprinting is exempted until the end of 2026, although the consulate may still invite the applicant for additional verification.
After submitting your passport, the application status is tracked online. The completed document is collected in the manner prescribed by the specific visa center or consulate.
For Q2 and S2 visas, family ties are confirmed with documents directly linking the applicant to the inviting person. Depending on the situation, this may be a marriage or birth certificate, a certificate of kinship, or a notarized document.
Then the consulate compares these documents with the invitation. The purpose of the visit, dates, location of stay, and information about who is paying the expenses must match. For an S2 visa, the inviting person's passport and valid residence permit in China must also be submitted. If proof of kinship was issued in another country, the requirements for translation, apostille, or legalization must be verified according to the regulations of the specific country of application.
Four dni roboczych is the standard guideline for a typical processing time after the passport and complete application package have been accepted. Online verification of the application is not included in this timeframe, so the actual processing takes longer.
If an error is found in the documents, a request for supplements is made, or an rozmowa is invited, the processing time will be extended. Some visa centers offer expedited processing in 2-3 dni roboczych, but the terms and availability of this service depend on the application location. Therefore, it's best not to tie your trip to the minimum fee.
The cost consists of a consular fee and, if applied for through a visa center, its service fee. The consular fee depends on citizenship and the number of entries, so a residence permit in another country alone does not change the rate.
For applicants who live in Europe other than their country of citizenship, the fees vary significantly depending on the application location. In the Czech Republic, a single-entry visa for most third-country nationals costs 600 CZK, in Hungary 12,000 HUF, and in Romania 113 RON. In Poland, the fee for non-Schengen Area passport holders is determined based on citizenship and the number of entries, so the exact fee should be checked for your specific passport.
Visa center fees, expedited processing, and document delivery may be charged separately. Therefore, before applying, check both the consular fee for your citizenship and the service costs of the chosen center.
In a visitor visa application, refusal often begins not with a ""bad passport,"" but with a discrepancy between the selected category and the actual trip. Again, Q2 is designed for a short visit to a relative who is a Chinese citizen or permanent resident, while S2 is for a trip to visit a foreign relative working or studying in the country.
And a trip to visit a friend, for example, doesn't become a Q2 visa just because someone in China is willing to send an invitation. If the relationship with the inviter or their status does not correspond to the declared category, the problem arises at the very beginning of the application.
Documents that provide different versions of the visit raise equally questionable questions. The application form lists one date, the invitation another, the relationship is not documented, the inviter's phone number is unanswered, and the information about the place of residence or expenses is inconsistent. Chinese consular instructions specifically list false or incomplete information, forged documents, and the inconsistency of the actual purpose with the visa type as reasons for refusal. If the applicant is applying in a country other than their country of citizenship, the lack of suitable proof of legal residence will further complicate the situation. If the applicant is paying for the trip themselves, the consulate may also examine whether the declared funds are sufficient to cover the expenses.
The consular officer has the right to request additional materials or invite the applicant for an rozmowa. Such a request cannot be ignored: if the purpose of the trip, the relationship with the inviting party, or the authenticity of the documents cannot be verified, the decision will be made based on what is already in the file.
Most of these issues are easier to resolve before submitting than to explain after a return or refusal. Therefore, when you contact Visa Agency, we handle your case from category selection to passport receipt:
The decision to issue a visa is ultimately made by the Chinese consulate. Our goal is to eliminate any discrepancies in advance, select the correct basis, and avoid leaving any weak points to the officer's discretion. Schedule a consultation with Visa Agency, and we will discuss your case individually!
